Senior PHP Developer

An independently-owned and managed media organisation, we began small in 2010 with The Journal and a sports site that is now The42, and have since established ourselves as a market leader in online news in Ireland. We employ dozens of journalists across our publications; The Journal, The42, Noteworthy and The Journal FactCheck unit are now among the most iconic of Ireland's digital brands.

Our FactCheck unit began operations in 2016 and has grown to become the leading factchecking entity in Ireland. And in 2019 we launched Noteworthy which funds and publishes in-depth investigative journalism based on suggestions from the public.

We are at the forefront of digital news publishing. We focus on providing open access to valuable journalism that helps our audience make the best possible decisions for their lives, their families and their communities.

About the job

Our development team is responsible for all aspects of our websites, mobile applications and infrastructure, from getting the latest news into the hands of our readers, to providing our editorial teams with the best tools to break the big stories.

You would be part of the web team.. This is a small team of developers who work closely together—through both ensemble programming sessions and solo development—with responsibility for our public-facing websites, our CMS, the APIs that drive our mobile apps and many other web applications.

The web team focuses on balancing the delivery of changes promptly with maintaining code quality and improving how they develop and work together. The team is responsible for our web applications from top to bottom; from implementing markup and styles for brand new page designs down to integrating with our IaaS resources and third-party APIs.

The web team works alongside our mobile team and infrastructure team to deliver new features, improve existing ones and keep our whole ecosystem running smoothly.

The goals of the team's work include:

  • Working with our editorial team to build and improve the tools and features that bring breaking new and important stories in a fast and reliable way.
  • Working with our design team to bring innovative ways for our audience to interact with quality information and to have input into what news stories matter to them
  • Working with our business team to provide open access to valuable journalism by supporting our advertising products, developing our sports membership integrations and innovative investigative journalism crowdfunding.

About the Platform

  • Our content is delivered by a PHP-based API that powers all of our platforms, including multiple websites and native Android and iOS apps
  • Our platform consists of modern PHP applications built using in-house and third party components, from data aggregation to image processing services.
  • Our infrastructure runs on Amazon Web Services
  • Our content management system is a modified version of the familiar WordPress platform. We’ve extended it with many new features that bring greater power to our writers.
  • Our applications are integrated with third-party services including Stripe, Firebase and ArcGIS.

About You

  • You love the idea of working in a tightly-knit development team where your decisions impact hundreds of thousands of users every day.
  • You’re fluent in PHP, Javascript and all the components needed for building modern scalable, web applications.
  • You’re familiar with modern PHP development and practices (e.g Composer, PSRs, etc)
  • You have developed PHP applications that have proven themselves at scale.
  • You have experience working with legacy code, improving extant features and introducing new functionality without discarding the existing behaviour that is sometimes obscured
  • Experience using some of Laravel, WordPress and components from Symfony, the PHP League, etc.
  • An understanding of automated testing, and experience of tools such as PHPUnit.
  • You’ve a good feeling for product design and usability.
  • You are a self-starter with an analytical mindset who can manage their own time and workload
  • You have excellent communication skills
  • You are passionate about clean code and refactoring code to be more expressive fills you with joy.
