News Correspondent

The Journal continues to grow as one of the most used and trusted sources of news in Ireland and is now looking to hire an experienced news journalist who has a track record of breaking stories and providing in-depth coverage of important news events.

The role will entail

  • Producing exclusive and original news stories
  • Reporting on the day’s most important news, focusing on fresh angles and followups
  • Responding to major breaking events
  • Working closely with newsdesk editors to provide sharp and insightful coverage and analysis of the day’s biggest stories
  • Identifying and delivering must-read content which deepens a general audience’s knowledge of what’s happening in the news

The successful candidate will

  • Have the ability to increase The Journal’s output of exclusive stories
  • Identify key stories and angles to interest The Journal’s audience
  • Be passionate about news-gathering and telling audiences the must-know stories of the day
  • Have a network of contacts and sources across a range of areas of Irish life
  • Have excellent writing and storytelling skills
  • Have a proven record of breaking major stories that help set the Irish news agenda across a range of topics
  • Be an excellent general news reporter
  • Be a self-starter who can work well with editorial desk
  • Liaise with other reporters on stories, bringing their expertise to elevate the whole team’s output

Skills required

  • At least three years’ experience in a news journalism role
  • Excellent contacts across various sectors
  • Excellent news judgement
  • Proven ability to self-start and deliver on original stories
  • Comfort with and expertise in the production of online content
  • Knowledge and experience of Ireland’s legal framework around defamation, publishing and copyright
