Senior iOS Developer

Journal Media (The Journal, The 42, Noteworthy) is looking for an experienced iOS developer who’s passionate about building amazing products. An independently-owned and managed media organisation, we began small in 2010 with The Journal and a sports-focused website that is now The 42. We have since established ourselves as a market leader in online news in Ireland. We employ dozens of journalists across our publications. The Journal, The 42, Noteworthy and The Journal FactCheck unit are now among the most iconic of Ireland's digital brands.

Our FactCheck unit began operations in 2016 and has grown to become the leading factchecking entity in Ireland. In 2019 we launched Noteworthy which funds and publishes in-depth investigative journalism based on suggestions from the public.

We are at the forefront of digital news publishing. We focus on providing open access to valuable journalism that helps our audience make the best possible decisions for their lives, their families and their communities.

About the job

Our development team is responsible for all aspects of our websites, mobile applications and their supporting infrastructure; from getting the latest news into the hands of our readers, to providing our editorial teams with the best tools to break stories.

You would be our sole iOS developer. You would work closely with our Android developer, planning development and peer reviewing one another's work. You would take ownership of our two iOS apps: The Journal and The 42.

The development team focuses on balancing the delivery of changes promptly with maintaining code quality. They also strive to improve how they develop applications and work together.

The mobile team works alongside our web team to deliver new features, improve existing ones and keep our whole ecosystem running smoothly.

The goals of the team's work include:

  • Working with our editorial team to build and improve the tools and features that allow them to publish breaking news and important stories in a fast and reliable way.
  • Working with our design team to bring innovative ways for our audience to interact with quality information and to have input into what news stories matter to them.
  • Working with our business team to support our reader subscriptions and to provide open access to valuable journalism by supporting our advertising products while also developing our reader contributions integrations and innovative investigative journalism crowdfunding.

About you

  • You are eager to learn and enjoy sharing what you know with others.
  • You are highly proficient in Swift and Objective C.
  • You've been developing apps for iOS for at least 3 years.
  • You have published and can show some personal projects in the App Store.
  • You write automated tests as part of your development process.
  • You can communicate technical decisions outside of the code through commit messages, pull requests and documentation.
  • You keep up-to-date with new technologies and techniques in software and mobile development.
  • You are a self-starter with an analytical mindset who can manage their own time and workload.
  • You have excellent communication skills.
  • You are passionate about clean code. Refactoring code to be more expressive is satisfying work to you.
